Gill - Designing marine gear
Designing marine gear that really works, starts with understanding what is required in the first place. At Gill, the process begins with a group of sailors at all levels, right up to Olympic medallists and Volvo Ocean Race Winners, getting together and going through their kit bags.
We then design our ranges to their exact specifications and when we have protoytpes, we ask them to test the products for us. Our extensive in-house and independent lab testing programme

Gill make ultra-technical sailing clothing for dinghy, power boating and cruising, and yacht style sailing & offshore equipment and clothing to KEEPS YOU DRY,WARM and COMFORTABLE in all conditions.
Gill sailing clothing - Technical Process
The process begins with a brain storm session. We invite a panel of sailors, relevant to the type of product that is being discussed. From club sailor to Olympic hopeful. From coastal cruiser to Volvo Ocean Racer. They bring in their kit bags and we discuss what works, what doesn't and what is missing. Then, out of the discussion comes a product or range brief for the team of designers to work and research on.
We the Gill scour the world for the absolute latest technical materials and cutting edge best designs are proposed for the team to select and move to the development sample stage.
Feedback is noted and where appropriate, designs will be modified until we are satisfied they do the best possible job they can.
One of the most important processes is the fabric and component testing department. When you are sailing you can be literally sitting in water. It is coming over the side in green bucket fuls rather than just raindrops from above.
Also salt water is far more abrasive than fresh water and the fabrics need rigorous testing to establish whether they will be up to the job. Sailor Brand Gill tests every single design and material in their own, on site laboratory full of waterproof testing equipment, abrasion machines and high humidity incubators to simulate the rigours of life on the ocean.
Once we are totally happy that everything performs as it should, it is time to get the products made. The quality and technical approach does not stop at this point. Before bulk production can commence, all fabrics and components have to be re-submitted for approval. When the final products arrive in our warehouse they are subjected to the most thorough scrutiny, which in the case of an Ocean Jacket is a 120 or more point check list. This includes complete water testing of both seams, quality, components and fabrics.
Prototypes and tests
When the designs are finalised, prototypes are made and sent out for field testing. An example of this is the sportscotland Scottish National Sailing centre where dedicated and knowledgable instructors sail every day. It also rains quite a bit too!
It is only then that products are released into stock for sale and we can be as confident as we possibly can be that the product will perform as it should. Confident enough to give the product the Gill lifetime guarantee so you can trust them to perform whenever you need them in hard sea conditions. The Gill - lifetime guarantee covers against all defects in fabrics, material and workmanship for any GILL product, include Equipment & Accessories - Products.
