Nicro types of ventilation
There are two major Nicro types of ventilation that Nicro Ventilation Systems provide.

Maintenance ventilation is defined as the amount of ventilation required to reduce or eliminate the growth of mold, mildew and musty air in the unattended boat cabin. In general, replacing the air at least once per hour is recommended.
The best way to guarantee a continuous, 24-hour air flow is by using a Nicro solar powered vent with a rechargeable battery. These vents require no wiring and do not draw off the boat's 12V system.
Comfort boat ventilation is another significant benefit of Nicro ventilation. It is the amount of ventilation required to affect the comfort level in the cabin. We recommend that air be circulated at least once per hour per person below deck.
When intake and exhaust air flows are combined, cross flow ventilation is achieved. All Nicro vents with rechargeable battery back-up come with two fan blades. This makes additional intake air flow easy to accomplish, adding fresh air and comfort below.

Nicro Solar Vents and technology
Nicro has been applying to solar technology to boat/marine ventilation longer than any other manufacturer. Nicro solar powered vent is constructed to function at a high efficiency level and maximizing the ventilation benefit to your boat.
Nicro solar vents utilize solar cells which are technically known as photo voltaic or PV cells.

The photovoltaic cells consist of wafer thin crystals which conduct positive and negative charges, resulting in a flow of electricity. The challenge is to minimize the heat generated by this process so as not to interfere with the sunlight-to-electricity conversion. Nicro solar powered vents are engineered to achieve an optimal conversion level that is consistent in every vent we produce.

Nicro solar powered vents models can move between 600 and 1000 cubic feet of air every hour and . The general guidelines for providing maintenance ventilation are as follows:

up to 24' boat Recommended: 1 Exhaust Vent

24 to 40' boat Recommended: 1 Exhaust Vent & 1 Intake Vent

40' and larger boat Recommended: 2 Exhaust Vents & 1 Intake Vent

Nicro Day/Night Plus Stainless-Steel Solar Vents

Solar-powered vents / ventilation, 24/7 - Eminently practical gifts for the boat owners on your list, these vents move up to 1000 cubic feet of air per hour, freshening the cabin 24/7 by running on solar power during the day, while charging a small battery to run at night—keeping mold and mildew at bay. They easily retrofit to existing 3" or 4" Nicro openings and come complete with an insect screen, below-decks shut-off damper and internal on/off switch. Two blades (exhaust and intake) are provided with each vent. Installing a pair of these helps to create efficient cross-ventilation.

Boat Ventilation

and types

Is seldom given the attention it deserves in power boats and crafts include sailboats. Sail boats small and large size usually have 2 dorade boat venis, on water-trap boxes mounted large cowl ventilators, which let freshair below and 4 to 6, or more vents, laiger auxiliaries ventilating all parts of the sailboat. Up to 35" and larger size power boats rarely have proper vents depend on their large opening ports, hatches and windows for Conditioning & ventilation. This is a good idea, when the crew is aboard to open the ports/windows in good weather conditions, but not when the boat is locked or raink weather.

Types:Dorade vents - must often be completely sealed when underway to keep them from bringing seawater into the boat cabin. A properly made Dorade vents will have a deck plate that can be used to rcplacc the cowling when the boat vent must be secured.

Low-profile or Mushroom type boat vents are not high-volume ventilators and come in a variety of styles and sizes. They are sufficient to improve air-flow through lockers and small boat compartments like storage compartments.

Now the Nicro Company has developed low profile vents with solar-powered fans, made for intake or exhaust. In hot weather areas the need for adequate airflow in port or at anchor is obvious. Wind scoops rigged over open boat hatches will best increase cabin comfort. They are easy and simple do-it-yourself projects, or they can be purchased from catalogs marine supply outlets, or online shops.

Nicro

Vents, installation

Both boats, sail or power can make use of the new solar powered Venst flying saucer manufactured by "Nicro" - popular solar vents and best solutions for getting air below , and others producers you can find them in almost every marine store. Vents best way toward eliminating musty odors and mildew with built-in spray and rain guards can be very useful on boats(keep the boat-interior cool, sweet smelling, dry and mildewfree during summer-days ).Solar vents tend to be more expensive, so watch(short service lives or product defects) for them to go on sale.

The Nicro units arc available in s.steel(also include thin metal cover installed over the plastic) and white plastic and but the two type are identical actually.

The advantage of Unit- the covered plastic are more expensive that s.stainless the advantage is that this plastic version, arc rated as highly water resistant is less subject to deterioration from UV solar rays.

The hardest way of the installation is cutting the mounting hole for vents- recommend more accurate the holesaw.

The effective way of developing air flow from solar vents(you can use these same procedures for passive boat vents) is to mount one in the front of the boat and one unit near the rear of the boat cabin.

Locations for mounting can be on the deck or in a hatch and cabininterior. After choosing the best mounting location, you must tape olf the area around where the hole will go to protects from scratches, it's important if you are installing the vent in a hatch. For installing the vent into a hatch cover you will use short nuts and bolts to through-bolt the unit and drill fastener-holes through the glazing and proced with the installation, you can use Nicro power vent where low profile continuous ventilation is required.

It's driven by solar cells and a ni-cad battery which gives it enough power without recharging

Nicro Solar Powered Air

One of the best way and best solutions for getting Enough fresh air below is the solar powered mushroom vent, Standard Version 4"-deliver 18 cfm. or High-output solar Version 4" - deliver 26 cfm. ...and they do it whether you are not or aboard every sun shines day and they do not even drain the solarvent's batteries. ..and better version solar vents - day and night, fully charged, they can run nearly 48 hours without sun, equipped with built-in nicad batteries.

As a result, vents are not tied into the el-system and your boat will be well ventilated and more fresh when you open it up for a cruise or fishing after a long absence. For solar powered boat vents located where the vent won't get direct sun(concentrated solar power -CSP), such as on the ineffective, the velocity was so low that lint from the dryer collected in the duct, largely clogging it. Long air duct runs if used need to be carefully engineered to ensure optimum proper operation.

More about your Vents

Solar vents

Solar vents have a small solar cell that generates enough electricity to turn the small motor operating the fan. These work extremely well in sunny areas and some can move 1,000 cubic feet of air per hour.

24-hour solar vents add a small, replaceable battery to the electrical circuit. The solar panel charges the battery during the day so that the fan can continue turning all night. In some of these, the battery has enough capacity to operate the fan for several days without sunshine.

Cowl vents

Cowl vents are the traditional ship’s ventilator with a mouth mounted on a stem. They're available in a wide variety of materials, shapes and styles. The larger the "mouth" and the taller the cowl, the more effective the ventilation. Cowls should be mounted in pairs, and faced in opposite directions to operate when any wind is blowing above deck. To allow your cowl vents to remain open in heavy rain or spray, mount them on a dorade or water trap.
Air turbines are very seldom seen on modern boats, are considered old fashioned and are generally seen only over the galley stoves of old schooners. They're bulky but move a tremendous volume of air when the wind is blowing.

Active Vents

Most active vents are adaptations of the passive vents above with the addition of a fan. The most popular active vent is a disc vent with fan blades built into the deckpipe. Many active vents are shipped with two sets of fan blades, one that blows outward as an exhaust vent and another that blows inward as an intake. This feature allows you to change the airflow as conditions change.

Active vents can be run off any power source and they are available with a number of different features.

12-volt vents use the ship’s power. Many have switches that allow you to use the vent in either the passive or active mode. They're ideal for boats with large battery banks or when plugged into shorepower with a battery charger running.

to Buy

Vents made of plastic or vinyl require very little maintenance. Stainless steel may require an occasional polishing; brass or bronze will need more work to maintain a good-looking finish.
Many vents have optional trim rings or other installation parts. Measure carefully and be sure to purchase all the necessary parts at the same time.

Insect screens reduce air flow substantially. If you're using screens, consider increasing the size or number of vents to compensate for the decreased effectiveness.

The natural air flow in many boats is from aft to forward, which is counterintuitive and comes as a surprise to many boat owners. Vents placed far apart fore and aft take advantage of this natural air flow.

Cowl vents may need guards over them to protect them from damage and prevent lines wrapping around their necks, especially on a sailboat. Place cowl vents carefully to avoid obstructing deck work.

Cabin fans and portlight fans can bolster ventilation considerably. Canvas covers over hatches and hoods or other deflectors above portlights allow them to remain open in light to moderate rain, just when boat ventilation is needed most.

A solar powered Nicro vent

To install is the chain stopper and a solar powered Nicro vent into the hatch. There will also be a quick connect fitting for the deck wash. Note the up/down buttons for the winch. The recess is sloped forward so any gunk is easily washed out.

Mounting the windlass elevated might be a KISS solution and keep the deck camber with toe rails or traditional scuppers

The winch buttons are foot operated. One is unlikely to need to step on the hatch while operating the winch. Still. The area is recessed to contain the muddy water coming up with the chain so it does not run down the side decks. The recess is sloping forward so the anchor cheek recess is the scupper. Being well away from the topsides the dirty water will not soil the hull.

Outland Hatch Covers Work

The forward hatch of course had a nicro vent but even the top hatch as little as it was had a special cut because of surface mounted hinges and a bumper for when it was fully open that had to be incorporated into the custom cut of its new Outand Hatch Covers.

This is a sailboat that the customer had unique side flush lens on non opening ports. Canvas or mesh would require snaps to be screwed into the fiberglas. The forward hatch had a NICRO vent but look how smart it looks all dressed up. All the covers can be removed in seconds and stored behind the seat cushions.

Nicro Solar Vent Install.
