These days that the growing bio content of fuel is increasing the risk of your boat's diesel tank , becoming contaminated with water and bacteria, we need to find more effective ways of keeping these bugs at bay, other than keeping the tank topped off.

There are two main ways of treating fuel to avoid the dreaded fuel diesel bug. One is to use a biological additive that kills existing bacteria; the other is to employ a centrifugal filtering system.

Problems with biocide

There are inherent problems with biocide. Finding a product that works can be hit-and-miss, and relies on you believing what the salesman tells you until experience tells you otherwise. Secondly the additive might indeed kill the bacteria, but it won't filter out all the remaining gloop and dead bugs, so constant filter cleaning is needed to keep your fuel system completely clean and reliable.

Fuel filtering system

The other, probably the most effective and comfortingly visible method, is to install a fuel filtering system that strains bugs out , using a centrifugal chamber, orior to it flowing through your existing filters. In fact, some larger powerboats have a secondary tank (day) installed, from which the boat engine is fed. Bulk fuel goes into the main tank as normal, after which it is cleaned via a centrifugal filtering system before being pumped into the day tank. Standard filtering is then employed between the day tank and engine.

Centrifugal cleaning to remove solid particulates and water

The MLS MFP2 Fuel Purifier(on photo) , which is designed to remove both water and solid particulates(Note: can remove particles down to 6-7 microns in size) from contaminated and dirty of fuel. Installed between the boat fuel tank and the fuel filter/water separator, it acts as the first line of defence by removing, dirt, water, grit and sludge.

To test it, take a small sample of contaminated fuel from the bottom of your boat tank,and add 15 - 20ml to the MicrobMonitor gel and shake vigorously. Now, you'll see red spots in the fuel-sample If your fuel has any bugs.

Bubbles are no good. One hidden source of air is old fuel hose. Over time the hose breaks down and become permeable. If all else fails, replace the hose.Completely replace your fuel hose. With today's additives, fuel hose breaks down quicker. The outside might look perfect but the interior walls are breaking down.Brand new hose is fairly inexpensive and as others have said bypass the Racor and see what happens.

Bubbles are sign of a air leak. Either a vacuum leak on the suction side, or a leak in low pressure point at filter. Spring loaded fitting is for draining fuel from bowl. Check your filter for a properly fitted o ring in top, or if there is something blocking spring loaded plug from closing in bowl bottom. Can you see bubbles form. Are they bubbling at the top, or coming from the bottom of the bowl.

A trick to locate the source of the air/ leak would be to install an electric fuel pump in the line. This will pressurize the entire system and any leak will be easy to locate. The in-line pump can be left in place and will be a back up for the mechanical lift pump, should the need ever arise.
